“….The ocean never handed me the gift of swimming. I gave it to myself.”— Y.Z., what I forgot to remember

We have many teachers in our lives. Many who have taught us lessons on love, trust, and survival. We may think of these people fondly, or we may think of them with regret. Either way, these people have taught us.

As students of life, we may assume we do not have a choice in some of the experiences life navigates us through. We may assume we meet our teachers by chance. We may assume the lessons we learn are just the side effect of chance meetings and relationships. Although these assumptions may need validation, what is measurable, is our willingness anddesire to learn and add the lesson to our life book.

As students, we make a choice in the learning. We make a choice in our approach to each experience. We make a choice in cultivating relationships and practicing introspection. We give ourselves the opportunity to grow in life, to lead in it, or to be a victim to it and be led by it.

The gift of learning is there. Waiting to be unwrapped and applied. It’s ours. Pick it up and don’t forget to send a thank you note into the universe.

“Sometimes We Are Taken Into Troubled Waters Not to Drown, but to Be Cleansed.”– Unknown

Standing at the shore, waves makes their way to our feet and begin to pull us into life’s waters. Some of us float right in and some are pulled in by its current.

This pull takes us without asking if we know how to swim. It introduces us to waves, some towering over our heads giving us the anxiety of anticipation – when will they break and crash onto us? And they always do. Come crashing down, pulling us under and turning our world upside down. We flail in darkness desperately looking for the flickering light to guide us to surface so we can breathe.

And that light is always there. Let me assure you.

It is always there for those who give in to a moment of surrender. Not to defeat, but to faith.

Faith that in calmness, that same water which pulled us in and flooded our senses, will also defy gravity so we may float back up to breathe. And once at the surface, we are a changed person. We are survivors.

We have felt fear and invited faith to meet it. We are aware that darkness exists in a closed mind and light is patiently waiting for us to open ourselves and invite it in. We have heard more in stillness than in chaos. We are renewed. We are cleansed….and we are prepared for the next wave.

Strong with the pain
Strong with the tears
Strong with release
Of all haunting fears

Strong with the love
Strong with the faith
Strong with the certainty
Of life’s flow of change

Strong with the gratitude
Strong with the giving
Strong with the promise
For the soul to keep on living
